Mrs Murphy is the class teacher and Mrs Davies is our fabulous teaching assistant! Mrs Hurst also teaches RE in Year 1 on a Tuesday morning and teaches Music on a Wednesday afternoon. Mrs Kearsley will also be teaching Science in Year 1 on Thursday afternoons while Mrs Murphy has Leadership time.
We do P.E. on Mondays and sometimes Thursdays but please make sure your child always has their kit in school. Please include some track suit pants or leggings in the PE bag for outdoor PE on the colder days.
Homework is given out every Friday. Please return it anytime before the following Thursday. Its only ever a quick activity and shouldn’t take long or be too stressful! Its a good way to show you what we’ve been doing in class and a good habit for the children to get into.
Reading books are changed once, sometimes twice a week. The children will choose 2 or 3 books to share and enjoy at home. Please sign and comment in their home/school diaries when they’ve read. They will move up through the book bands as the year progresses. We read a range of books from different reading schemes, including Floppy’s Phonics, Project X books, Snapdragons. Most books are phonetically decodable and support our Phonic based approach to teaching reading/writing. Some of our books, which the children love (the older ORT Kipper stories) help build up the childen’s sight vocabulary and word recognition skills. We do our best to encourage the children to read a range of fiction/non-fiction books, older and newer ones.
The children may also bring home class/school library books. These are for them to share at home and enjoy reading. Please try to keep them in their reading packets then we can change them as and when…
We do Phonics – Letters and Sounds – everyday. The children are currently working on Phase 5. Some children are working at Phase 3. The children are grouped accordingly and either work with Mrs Murphy or Mrs Davies.
The children need water-bottles with them everyday,or the queue for the water fountain is ridiculous! Its better for the children to have easy access to water all day long.
Fred the adventure Ted is our class bear this year. He will go home with a child every Friday. Have fun with him and make sure he’s back in school the Friday after. Please don’t feel obliged to take millions of photos and go anywhere exciting. I remember that feeling of dread when my children used to come out of school clutching the class-bear! A little picture and a bit of writing is perfect.
The children may bring in a piece of fruit/vegetables for afternoon play and are offered a selection of school fruit in the mornings. We also enjoy toast on Friday mornings, made by our PTFA ladies. Milk letters are sent home at the start of term.
Our Autumn Topic is It’s a wonderful life! and Weather and Seasons. We’ll be learning all about our bodies and our senses and how the weather changes throughout the seasons, leading upto Christmas fun and games!
In the Spring term our Context for Learning is called HOME SWEET HOME. We will be finding out about where we live and our local area as part of our Geography work . Also looking at houses and homes from long ago in History. In Science we will be investigating Materials and finding out about Animal’s homes and how we care for Pets.
My favourite topic is our Summer Term Topic BESIDE THE SEASIDE during which we explore journeys and adventures. Look at holiday destination and holidays in the past. We also have a beach party and are having a trip to Knowsley Safari Park!
